Since you’re on this blog post, it seems you’re planning on going skiing, yay! Winter is not complete without getting on those ski (or your snowboard) and race down the mountain. But where’s the best place to go? Sometimes, the decision is quite hard to make, especially when you’re a first-timer. So here’s a quick overview of what to think about when choosing your ski resort:
Step #1 – CHOOSE THE RIGHT DESTINATION
This might be an obvious topic, but still, it can be hard. Especially when you’re in Europe, you should check ahead where exactly you’re going. Depending on your chosen season, you should check the weather and snow heights in the areas you’re thinking about going to. While we have snow in the Austrian mountains in January, you might not have it in Germany. The decision is made: You have to go to Austria (in this made-up case). You should also check how many resorts that country has and how high the mountains are.
Step #2 – CHOOSE THE RIGHT AREA

After choosing the destination, evaluating your perfect ski resort can be tough as well. What you should check is a little bit up to your level of experience. You should check for:
Track Levels: If you’re a beginner, you have to make sure that your resort offers easy tracks. If you’re more experienced, check how many tracks they’ve got that suit your level. Tracks are usually color-coded, but that’s different from country to country. In Austria, for example, it’s: blue = beginners, red = advanced, black = professional (see the plan from the Dachstein area above)
Number and length of the tracks: Depending on how long you’re staying in the resort, you should check how many tracks and lifts they have and how long they are. If you’re only skiing for 1-2 days, a smaller resort is quite fine. If you’re staying longer, you could get bored easily on the same tracks whenever your resort is not big enough.
Food and Drinks: for sure, you should stay well hydrated and nourished, so check for the restaurants there. Of course, it’s not absolutely necessary. Still, if you’re getting hungry in the mountains, it’s nice to enjoy a fresh drink with an amazing mountain view. And of course, we’re also talking about Aprés-Ski…. cheers!
Step #3 – CHOOSE YOUR HOTEL
Now that we finally chose the perfect Ski Resort, you can think about where you want to stay.
Public Transport/Parking: Some Ski Resorts offer public ski busses, so if you want to leave your car, that comes in handy. Just check if there’s a bus stop in front or close to your hotel or Airbnb. If you want to drive in your own car, check your prices ahead. Some hotels offer free parking, some not. Also, check the parking Situation at the Ski Resort.
Ski Rental: If you’re not bringing your own ski, you have to rent some at the Ski Resort OR in the City/in the Hotel. Since the Ski rental can get a little bit more pricy in the resort itself, you should also check the rental stores in the town where you’re staying. They often have great offers, and there are fewer people during peak times (when the lift’s open or close). Some hotels even have a store/rental included.
Storage Room: Now that you’re fully equipped with your Ski or Snowboard, you need a place to stow it. Since you don’t want to bring your wet and snowy equipment into your hotel room, check for the hotels that offer a storage room for ski equipment. Those are built for those needs and keep your equipment dry and clean for the next day.
